It's never been easier to make a dashboard look busy. Charts, gauges, sparklines — a screen full of colour that somehow leaves you no wiser about whether the business is actually doing well. The problem isn't too little data; it's too much of the wrong kind.

Here are the six numbers that genuinely matter for a growing business. Watch these and you can safely ignore most of the rest.

A dashboard showing revenue of 4.2 lakh up 18 percent, 86k receivables, 128 orders, 92 percent and 34 percent, with a rising sales trend
A good dashboard answers "how are we doing?" in five seconds, not fifty.

1. Revenue (and its trend)

The headline number — but the trend matters more than the total. ₹4 lakh this month means little on its own; ₹4 lakh and rising for three months straight tells a story. Always read revenue against time.

2. Gross margin

Revenue is vanity; margin is sanity. Gross margin — what's left after the cost of what you sold — is the number that decides whether growth makes you richer or just busier. Two businesses with the same revenue and different margins are not in the same league.

3. Outstanding receivables

How much have you billed but not yet collected? A big, growing receivables figure means your profit is stuck in other people's bank accounts. This is the number that quietly causes cash crunches in otherwise healthy businesses.

4. Cash position

The most honest number of them all: how much money you actually have. Profit is an opinion; cash is a fact. A business can be profitable on paper and still run out of cash — so keep this one in permanent view.

5. Best (and worst) sellers

Which products drive the business, and which just take up shelf space? Knowing your top sellers tells you what to keep in stock and promote; knowing your dead stock tells you what to clear.

6. Repeat-customer rate

Winning a new customer costs far more than keeping one. A healthy share of repeat business is one of the strongest signals that what you're selling — and how you're selling it — is working.

Read them together

No single number tells the truth alone. Rising revenue with thinning margins, or healthy sales with ballooning receivables, are both warning signs you'd miss looking at one figure in isolation. The skill is reading them as one picture.

Lekhio's live dashboard puts these numbers front and centre — revenue trends, margins, receivables and best sellers updating in real time as you work — so the real state of your business is always one glance away.
